The Difference Between CBD Oil vs. Hemp Oil
If you’re new to the CBD industry, you probably have plenty of questions about cannabinoids. Chiefly among them, you may be wondering “what is the difference between CBD oil and hemp oil?” It’s a valid question. For one, both CBD producers and consumers often use the terms interchangeably. Additionally, companies will often advertise a product as “CBD oil” or “hemp oil.”
However, both of these terms actually refer to specific products. And if you don’t know the difference, it’ll be difficult for you to make educated decisions.
CBD Oil vs. Hemp Oil: What’s the Difference?
Both CBD oil and hemp seed oil are created from the hemp plant. However, they come from separate parts of the plant.
CBD oil comes from full hemp plant leaves and flowers (aerial parts). It gets its name from the main component, cannabidiol, or CBD. Instead, hemp seed oil is known for being high in protein and vitamin E. In addition, hemp seed oil contains both omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids. In fact, it is one of the only known sources that contains both of these types of nutrients. Hemp oil is also a popular ingredient in cosmetic shampoos, lotions, and soap.
CBD Oil and Hemp Oil: How They’re Made

The next step is to treat the extract with a vaporizer which removes the ethanol from the slurry. This leaves behind a rich, amber-colored extract.
Hemp seed oil is made using a cold-press process. Producers de-shell the seeds, chill them, and squeeze them in a press. A green, oily substance is left over after the pressing process. This is hemp oil.
Hemp Seed Oil vs Hemp Extract Oil
In contrast, hemp oil may also refer to hemp extract that uses oil as a medium and is different than hemp seed oil. Hemp extract is made from hemp plant flowers and leaves instead of hemp seeds and may contain CBD. Be sure to read the label to see if the product is made with hemp seed oil or hemp extract oil.
